Today you raise me on a scaffold high

Where memory of hunt and horse is dimmed

As Southern Woman empties me of life

My spirit will anticipate this end

And songs that truer honor might have sung

Will fill the air and magnify her smile

The blood upon my hands will wash away

Forgiven sins that have no need of trial

Then she will pass me on to unknown lands

Where mystery will cut me from your sight

As I shape change above this earthly dust

Become some flaming star-

Some new world's light.
